In late 2000, a Russian duo broke onto the music scene, titillating audiences and critics with their provocative songs and sex appeal. After beating thousands at producer Ivan Shapovalov’s Moscow auditions, 15-year-old singers Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova joined forces to form the musical sensation t.A.T.u. The two let their voices be heard with their first single ‘All The Things She Said’. The song chronicled the heartache of a lesbian relationship and became an anthem for the gay community, going on to sell two million copies worldwide. The single was released from t.A.T.u’s first English album, 2002′s ’200 km/h in the Wrong Lane’, produced by Shapovalov and prominent figures in the recording industry. The most notable of mixing engineers involved in the record was Robert Orton, who went on to win a Grammy in 2010 for music mixing and sound engineering Lady Gaga’s ‘The Fame Monster’.

Following the success of ‘All The Things She Said’, t.A.T.u put out a second hit single titled ‘Not Gonna Get Us’. Shortly after, the duo performed a medley of their two hits on the 2003 MTV Music Awards, accompanied by hundreds of uniformed backup dancers who proceeded to kiss at the songs’ final note. The performance sealed t.A.T.u’s reputation to the public as innovative, if not impassioned.
In May of 2002, t.A.T.U competed for Russia in the Eurovision Song Contest, placing third. In 2004, the group broke their contract with Shapovalov, frustrated with his need for media controversy. t.A.T.u took a hiatus when Volkova became pregnant, and one year later released their second English album ‘Dangerous and Moving’, under Universal Music International. After three subsequent Russian albums, the duo officially disbanded. However, their legend lives on as the most successful Russian group of all time, selling over ten million copies of their records.
